Traditional Midwifery Care

Traditional midwifery care puts you at the center of your childbearing journey. Rather than having someone manage your pregnancy and birth medically, you will have a caring sister discussing concerns, giving advice and information, and monitoring you and your baby for any signs that intervention are needed. As a traditional midwife I am trained to manage medical emergencies and to recognize when pregnancy or birth veer away from normal, but those interventions are the exception rather than the norm for all families.

Each prenatal visit has an hour set aside for you, so that we get to know each other and you get all of your questions answered throughout pregnancy. Standard care at each appointment consists of discussion, urinalysis, pulse, blood pressure, fundal height measurement, palpation, and listening to baby. Standard obstetric lab and ultrasounds testing is offered and facilitated, but you are in the drivers seat of what your care consists of. My normal schedule for appointments is once a month until 30 weeks, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks, and then weekly after that until baby arrives. I have a lending library to share and herbal knowledge for any concerns that come up.

Your birth at home will look, and feel, very different from a hospital birth. You don’t have to worry about when to head out to drive to the hospital and just get to settle into labor in the comfort of your own space. I have pools that I lend out if you want to labor or birth in water, and give you a list of supplies to have on hand ahead of time. I come with many supplies of my own so that I am prepared for any situation that may arise. I listen to baby throughout labor and stay nearby to monitor how you’re doing and give advice when needed.

After baby arrives I will make sure you are both well while you snuggle and nurse. I’ll make sure you get fed and are comfortable for that first hour, then will help you to the bathroom and give baby a thorough exam after we cut the cord. I’ll continue monitoring you both as I pack up and make sure everything is cleaned up, then will head home after a couple of hours.

I’ll come back between 24 and 48 hours after birth to check on you both and file the birth certificate paperwork. After that I plan to check on you around a week after birth, 2-3 weeks after, and 6 weeks after. I am available in between those appointments if anything comes up and you need an extra visit!

With midwifery care and homebirth you are in the drivers seat and I am there with you to help navigate. This is your pregnancy, your body, and your baby. I am just a source of information, and care to help you transition through this important time.
